Humanities Guåhan established the MOTHEREAD/FATHEREAD program in 2000 to encourage family reading and improve literacy on Guam. Teams of trained facilitators teach a curriculum that uses children’s books and interactive lesson plans to help adults build essential skills and incite a love for reading.

With ten years of grant support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and Guam Community College through the Workforce Investment Act, Title II, Adult Education and Family Literacy Act, our organization has partnered with over 53 nonprofit organizations, schools, government agencies and village mayors to reach over 2,500 adults and their families through MOTHEREAD/FATHEREAD. We are also pleased to announce new grant support from Big Brother, Big Sisters Guam and WestCare Pacific Islands that helps to further promote our goal to reach as many more families as possible throughout our island.

Note: Data for this listing was compiled from online sources by UOG social work students enrolled in SW110 Introduction to Community Services on Guam classes (Sections 1 and 2) in the spring semester of 2017

The program strengthens and supports adult literacy and critical thinking through reading and writing, reflective listening and speaking, and fun activities to do at home.

The MOTHEREAD/FATHEREAD program targets “underserved” community members, including those who are incarcerated, economically disadvantaged, and recent immigrants with limited English skills. Themes within the multicultural selection of books and activities highlight child development and family empowerment.
