Funded through the Drug-Free Communities Grant administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), WestCare Pacific Islands initiated this community-based coalition. The mission of Coalition for Drug-Free Dededo (Thrive) is to reduce youth substance use and misuse through education, prevention, and leadership, by creating an environment that supports the ability of youth, individuals, families, and the village of Dededo to withstand challenges. Thrive also aims to decrease risk factors and increase protective factors related to substance use and misuse through community awareness and education of youth and their parents/caregivers.
Through the DFC grant, Thrive is connected to a global network of coalition for drug-free communities. Thrive consists of 12 sectors and beyond, representing the Youth, Parent, Government, Civic/Volunteer, Religious, Youth Serving Organization, Other Organizations Reducing Substance Abuse, Business, Media, School, Health, and Law Enforcement. The coalition is diverse, ensuring true representation of the village community it serves.
