Coordinadora Paz para la Mujer, Inc. (CPM) is a Coalition whose membership is made up of thirty-five (35) organizations and fourteen (14) individual members.
It is made up of emergency shelters, service organizations, universities, feminists and human rights activists who deal with the problem of violence against women, especially violence between couples and sexual assault. CPM provides community education, technical assistance, and referral support for survivors of gender-based violence, victim assistance programs, and other related organizations that work with survivors and their children.
Founded in 1989 by a group of feminists, CPM was then at the forefront of efforts to urge the Puerto Rican legislature to enact Law 54 in order to address intimate partner violence in Puerto Rico.
In 1997, it was established as the Puerto Rican Coalition against Domestic Violence with funds granted by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, to carry out promotion, intervention and prevention activities. In 2002, it was constituted as a Dual Coalition by adding the sexual assault component with funds from the Federal Department of Justice.
The CPM's actions are aimed at providing services for female survivors and their families, conducting research on gender-based violence, and mobilizing women to demand changes in their private lives, as well as in public and political responses. These actions have been instrumental in changing not only the law, but also public opinion and official policies and practices regarding intimate partner violence.
CPM is committed to diversity, not only in its composition, but also in the topics addressed. It has an interdisciplinary approach with the participation of shelters, academia, feminists, government organizations and community-based organizations. CPM promotes dissemination in public media and digital networks to alter the norms and values that lead to dating violence, gender discrimination, and to encourage community participation.
